Public Health Sciences Division, Fred Hutch
Dr. Christopher Su is a hematologist/oncologist who sees patients at the Hematology/Oncology Clinic at Harborview Medical Center in downtown Seattle; he treats across the spectrum of classical to malignant hematology. Dr. Su also researches financial toxicity — the financial burden imposed on patients due to repeated appointments, hospitalizations, drug copayments, lost work and psychological distress — and how it affects outcomes in patients with cancer. An expert in outcomes research and quantitative methods, Dr. Su has published work on disparities in lung cancer screening and its impact on lung cancer mortality and on the positive effect of the Affordable Care Act on financial barriers experienced by cancer patients, among other studies. As a member of the Hutchinson Institute for Cancer Outcome Research (HICOR), he leverages HICOR's unique databases and designs novel approaches to study the impact of financial hardship at diagnosis on subsequent care outcomes in patients with blood cancers. Over the years, Dr. Su has received many honors and awards including the Mark Roth Memorial Award from the University of Michigan, a Scholar Award from the American Society of Hematology (ASH), and a Career Development Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
