Fred Hutch Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization that also serves as UW Medicine’s cancer program.
Fred Hutch and UW Medicine are long-time collaborators — including nearly 25 years providing cancer care together through the former Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA).
In April 2022, the two collaborators came together to develop a new model for cancer care that would better serve our community, region and beyond. First, the people, programs, and facilities of both the former SCCA and the former Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center merged to form a single organization renamed Fred Hutch Cancer Center. Then, the new Fred Hutch — which remains independent — formalized an agreement with UW Medicine to serve as their cancer program.
Through this innovative approach, we’re able to double the expertise we can offer to all the patients we serve.

Lifesaving Research
Fred Hutch and UW Medicine are each home to Nobel Prize-winning research. In addition to cancer-focused research, Fred Hutch also pursues discoveries in infectious disease and fundamental sciences; UW Medicine’s research spans many other disease types and health challenges. Fred Hutch also leads a Cancer Consortium with University of Washington and Seattle Children’s, advancing scientific understanding and influencing cancer care worldwide.
Growing Together
Fred Hutch is responsible for securing philanthropic funding for oncology on behalf of both organizations, while also raising support for infectious disease research at Fred Hutch. Strong philanthropic giving is critical in our mission of translating groundbreaking discoveries into preventive medicine and cures that will make life beyond cancer a reality.
