SEATTLE — October 31, 2018 — Both options are designed to increase quality of life for people diagnosed with breast cancer. SCCA is a national leader in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and one of only a few cancer centers in the nation to offer these options.
SAVI SCOUT is a surgical guidance system that allows breast cancer patients to avoid the need for insertion of a guidewire into the breast on the day of their lumpectomy surgery. Instead, a small infrared clip (smaller than a grain of rice) is inserted at the patient’s convenience in the days or weeks prior to surgery. During surgery, the clip emits a radar signal activated by a probe, or wand, used by the surgeon in the operating room. The SCOUT system aids surgeons both in detecting the exact location of the tumor and guiding the precise removal of cancerous tissue. This new approach increases comfort, convenience and reassurance for patients.
The Integrative Medicine program at SCCA combines evidence-based complementary therapies with conventional cancer treatment to help patients cope with treatment side effects and enhance wellness and quality of life. It is available to all SCCA cancer patients who are undergoing, or who have completed, treatment following a cancer diagnosis. Endorsed by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the patient-centered, evidence-based field of integrative oncology utilizes mind and body practices, including acupuncture, mind-body medicine, naturopathic medicine, yoga and lifestyle modifications, together with conventional cancer treatment.
“Both SAVI SCOUT and the new Integrative Medicine program will undoubtedly support patient quality of life before, during and following treatment for breast cancer at SCCA,” said Sara H. Javid, MD, director of the Breast Health Clinic at SCCA. “They complement a wide range of preventive services and innovative breast cancer treatment options that we are proud to offer — including mammograms, multidisciplinary breast cancer clinics, and supportive care services — which combine the best and brightest minds to support a tailored outcome for each individual patient who turns to us for treatment and care.”
