I have been serving people’s spiritual health needs for over 20 years. First, as a music and worship director in churches, and now as a Spiritual Health clinician. I joined Fred Hutch in the fall of 2024 and see patients at Fred Hutch at UW Medical Center – Northwest, Fred Hutch Cancer Center – Proton Therapy and Fred Hutch at Overlake Cancer Center.
I discovered spiritual care through naturally offering support to musicians and church members when I was a worship director. As a musician, I found my instincts in prioritizing listening also helped me to provide spiritual care to people. I found the work of hearing people was deeply meaningful for me and healing for them. This led me to pursue this work further.
I enjoy the chance to connect and provide compassionate support to people who are going through difficult experiences, helping people to use and grow their personal and spiritual resources to find a sense of peace amid grief and loss.
I am a Unitarian Universalist. For me, this means I find value in the Christian tradition that was my first spiritual language and have come to speak and appreciate many other spiritual languages, including those languages that find meaning outside of spirituality.
Outside of work I spend most of my time as a father of three awesome young people and partner to Jess, who also works at Fred Hutch! We love to camp, hike and explore. I play music, write songs and poetry and play video games when I need a good distraction.
Patient Care Philosophy
For me, Spiritual Health is all about connections. In our solitary society, we underestimate the way our connections nourish us. But when crisis strikes, we discover how much we depend on others. I approach patient care by listening first then helping build bridges between people and their best resources. Be that nature, music, spirituality, family or something else, I love to explore with patients and discover together ways they can use their personal and spiritual resources to find strength during their treatment and care with cancer or illness.
I want people to know that I come with an open heart and mind. I honor the countless ways people find meaning in life and will engage with you in a curious and affirming way.
