Medical Oncology

“I want to be a partner to my patients, who deserve the best care possible. I want to help achieve this by focusing on the physical components of cancer and on each person’s overall well-being.”

— Alice

How have you been personally impacted by cancer?

A family member had an early-stage melanoma diagnosed at a young age. It was successfully removed with surgery, and further follow-up did not show any other areas that were concerning. As part of a population with lower incidences of melanoma, it never crossed my mind that someone in my family could develop this type of cancer. Unfortunately, it can affect anyone at any age.

Do you have a favorite memory of working with a patient you’d like to share?

A few years ago, I got to know a patient and her family quite well through the course of her treatment, and they felt like extended family to me. She was cured of pancreatic cancer but unfortunately developed a secondary cancer years later. When I saw her at that time, I was dismayed about her new diagnosis, and we talked about the findings and plan for treatment — which meant going through chemotherapy again. As we discussed the details of her treatment, she voiced her concerns. Then she shared that she was less anxious after our visits and was appreciative of the way I was able to explain diagnostic information in a way she could understand.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Medical oncology, benign and malignant hematology

I am an advanced registered nurse practitioner who sees patients at the South Lake Union Clinic.

My background is originally in medical genetics, which was mostly laboratory-focused. I craved interaction with patients, so I returned to school for a nursing degree. As a nursing student, I grew to love oncology. Working with patients who were having stem cell transplants became the foundation for me to grow my knowledge and become a nurse practitioner. All patients should be treated with dignity and respect.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
