“It is a privilege for me to be involved in a patient’s cancer care. I believe that quality cancer care is important but it needs to be delivered in the context of the patient’s overall health and goals. To me, gaining or maintaining quality of life is as important as gaining quantity of life.”

— Dr. Dash

Why do you practice oncology?

Atreya Dash, MD, loves that he is able to use science to help people at the bedside. “It always makes me sad to hear of a patient with cancer, but I find satisfaction in helping patients overcome the challenge of dealing with cancer.” Dr. Dash has been involved in numerous clinical projects in prostate and bladder cancer. Since joining UW Medicine and Fred Hutch, he has had the opportunity to work on translational projects for these cancers as well as bring the latest new treatments from clinical trials to patients. “In my lifetime as a physician, I hope that we are able to specifically tailor cancer treatment for an individual patient’s cancer on a molecular basis in a way that is consistent with a patient’s goals to maintain quality of life,” Dr. Dash says. Outside of work, Dr. Dash enjoys outdoor activities with his children.
