“I believe that I am here to be an educator and a patient advocate. I value being able to help patients navigate and make informed decisions with regard to treatment and care with the best available evidence. I want to help my patients make the best decisions for their health and well-being.”

— James

Why do you practice oncology?

Prior to becoming a physician assistant, Jim Drechsler spent eight years as a firefighter and a paramedic. Jim went on to graduate from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Health and worked in family practice in St. Helens, Oregon. Jim says it was his passion for service and care that drew him to Fred Hutch.

“Medicine to me is much more than a job. I wake up every morning excited to go to work.” Jim attributes his attitude to the dynamic environment of working with a multidisciplinary team as well as being able to have a lasting impact on the lives of every patient he works with.   It was the unique challenges faced by both patient and provider that made Jim decide to pursue a career in cancer care. “I find it a privilege to be entrusted to walk alongside those who are fighting this disease with hope and honesty.” Jim also values his ability to promote better screening methods that lead to safer and more effective cancer treatments.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
