How has cancer affected you personally?

Cancer has touched my life in many ways. When I was eight years old, my older cousin died of cancer. I saw firsthand how this diagnosis can devastate a family; it was part of what propelled me into a career as an oncologist. Years later, when I was an adult, my father also died after a long struggle with cancer. I remember that we often felt helpless during his journey. Looking back, I think those experiences showed me how much families endure when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer and how important it is to support them.

What do you want patients to know about working with you?

I believe in a collaborative approach to medicine, a partnership where we work together to preserve your physical and mental well-being. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all philosophy of care, I believe that patients should be treated as individuals. Each person has their own unique needs; while two people may have the same illness, their disease trajectories, treatment plans and outcomes may be vastly different. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is simply being there for patients and families, helping them — even in a small way — through a difficult experience.

I am a board-certified medical oncologist who cares for patients with a variety of cancers and blood disorders, from breast cancer to leukemia. Prior to joining Fred Hutch at Overlake Cancer Center, I completed a fellowship in hematology-oncology and practiced medicine in the Chicago, Illinois, area for 10 years. At Overlake Cancer Center, I work with a multidisciplinary team of specialists — including nurses, genetic counselors, palliative care experts and other staff — to help you reach the best possible outcome. Twice I have been the recipient of Seattle Met magazine’s Top Doctor Award.

Community Oncology

Our mission is to provide patients with the highest quality, personalized care closer to home. As part of Fred Hutch, our community oncologists offer patients multidisciplinary tumor board opinions, clinical trials and expertise in treating a variety of cancers.
