“I see myself as a navigator; it’s my job to chart the most state-of-the-art treatment course for you.”

— Dr. Lukas

Why do you practice oncology?

Caring for others has been my passion that started in grade school. We were the family on our block that took in many stray animals, and I nursed baby squirrels back to health — this passion continued through high school (where I was a de facto counselor).  It continued with my award of a PhD for my research into the genetic roots of breast cancer, which pointed me toward oncology. The lightbulb burst as I watched my aunt go through a diagnosis of and treatment for metastatic lung cancer. Her medical care was very impersonal and I knew that people deserved both a more warm and personal touch —  and more personalized treatment as well —  no matter the diagnosis or expected outcome.

What do you hope it's like for a patient to work with you?

People often come in feeling perplexed about their illness and out of control. Many have abandoned all hope. I see myself as a navigator; it’s my job to chart the most state-of-the-art treatment course for the patient and their family, and — given my experience and knowledge of the medications currently out there and in the pipeline — it’s also my job to give hope. From both personal and professional experience, I’ve learned much about how physicians should relate to patients and family members. Every consultation with my patients is a privilege; I strive to make cancer treatment the most healing process it can be for everyone.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
General medical oncology, benign and malignant hematology

I am a board-certified medical oncologist who sees patients at Fred Hutch Cancer Center - Issaquah.

Prior to rejoining Fred Hutch, I was a medical director at Seagen, specializing in early bladder cancer. I have served as the director of hematology-oncology research at The Everett Clinic and was on active duty in the U.S. Navy, serving in Afghanistan in 2011-2012. In addition to caring for patients with a variety of cancers, I am also involved in clinical trials to advance our understanding of how to best treat cancer. My expertise extends to immunotherapy, which uses the body’s own immune system to fight cancer and the development of cancer vaccines.

Community Oncology

Our mission is to provide patients with the highest quality, personalized care closer to home. As part of Fred Hutch, our community oncologists offer patients multidisciplinary tumor board opinions, clinical trials and expertise in treating a variety of cancers.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
