Hematology

“I work with patients and their families to help them understand their condition so we can provide the best treatment options available.”

— Dr. Hammons

What are you most excited about when it comes to your work?

During residency, I was fortunate to work with an amazing ICU physician who introduced me to the pulmonary embolism response team (PERT) approach. PERT refers to a team of experts from difference medical specialties that collaborates to make complex decisions for the best management of patients who have new blood clots in their lungs. My aim is to continue to contribute to the research and development of high-quality, team-based care in thrombosis/clotting and hemostasis in high-risk critical care situations.

My favorite part of working with patients is when I can teach them about their disease process. There is no such thing as a silly question. I am happy to draw pictures, make lists and share pertinent images related to their problems. Education is empowering, and I believe it ultimately allows for better shared decision-making and treatment.

What brought you to hematology-oncology?

My passion evolved from an initial interest in biophysics and space exploration. My tool of choice changed from a telescope to a microscope when I began working in a cellular biology lab in college and investigating how cells differentiate — how they decide what type of cells to become (red blood cell, skin cell, bone cell, etc.) when faced with different nutrients or environments. My curiosity about this process and its effects on the human body fuels my continuous learning in the field.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Classical hematology, thrombosis, hemostasis, sickle cell disease

I am a physician who sees patients at the South Lake Union Clinic.

My research in thrombosis investigates pulmonary embolism outcomes after provider-initiated emergency activation of a hospital system-wide pulmonary embolism response team  (PERT). As part of my fellowship, I also studied novel immunotherapeutics and bone marrow failure in blood cancers, primarily multiple myeloma.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
