Medical Oncology

Hematology-Oncology

“I view each patient as a competent person who is involved in society, family, work and so forth, suddenly being faced with a cancer diagnosis — not as a 'cancer case.'”

— Dr. Jafari

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

My goal is to help patients make challenging decisions for the best possible outcomes without feeling overwhelmed or overlooked. Breaking down and explaining the complexity of a patient’s condition and its treatment are a large component of providing care.

Through the years, patients have revealed the depths of human resilience to me, and I have appreciated their words of wisdom. I have learned a lot from them.

What do you value about providing cancer care?

Effective cancer care is about more than following an algorithm. Our experience in clinical practice teaches us that we need to see beyond the surface and look at individual scenarios. The science is always evolving, and applying this new information can have a big impact on a large group of patients. I became interested in medical oncology because it requires providers to bring a vast amount of scientific information to a delicate human interaction.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
