Surgery

“I see each patient as their own person. I am here to be a guide, determine what they find important and mix this with treatments based on the best available evidence. My goal is to help people understand their situations and make decisions.”

— Dr. Wilcox Vanden Berg

What do you value about your work?

I really value getting to know what each patient finds important. I had someone tell me that they wanted a second opinion because the doctor they had seen before told them, “We’re going to do this,” without asking the patient what they wanted. I appreciate talking with patients about every option, not pushing them in any one direction and letting them choose the path. These connections and conversations are incredibly gratifying.

What brought you to urologic oncology?

I had an early interest in medicine and would watch “ER” with my mom starting around age five. As an undergraduate student, I wanted to be a neurosurgeon, so I studied biology with an emphasis on neuroscience and behavior. When I got to medical school, I was exposed to urology and realized my personality matched the specialty. It brought together the best parts of other areas of practice that interested me.

During my training, I grew to deeply value providing care to patients living with cancer and the surgeries we could offer them, which are often associated with great outcomes. As an example, the other day I was talking to someone with newly diagnosed prostate cancer. It was great to be able to tell him, “You are going to continue to live your life, so let’s focus on what happens after care.”

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
