Dermatology

“We are each touched in some way when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer. Comprehensive patient care extends far beyond what occurs at the bedside.”

— Dr. Hathaway

What do you value about your work?

I appreciate when we are on the other side of diagnosis, and I get to see patients living their best lives. Cancer can change almost everything all at once, and it can change patients’ perspectives. Hearing stories, seeing photos and witnessing their experience beyond the diagnosis is such a humbling and gratifying part of being a physician.

My mother was diagnosed with metastatic cancer during my first year of medical school, so I was learning to care for others through medicine while also caring for a loved one undergoing cancer treatment. This experience not only gave me the motivation to provide exceptional medical care to patients, it also helped me understand that providing for their family members and personal community is just as important.

What brought you to dermatology and what do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

I chose to specialize in dermatology and skin cancer to combine both medical science and caring for cancer in one discipline. The progress made in melanoma and skin cancer treatment and care during the last decade is amazing, and patients are now living exceptional lives despite a diagnosis of melanoma or other aggressive skin cancers.

Keeping people well cared for — during and after their cancer diagnosis and treatment — is my goal every day. Collaboration and team work are essential to melanoma and skin cancer care. Care that is truly patient-centered is focused not only on treating the disease with the latest tools, but also addressing the full scope of the emotional, social and practical needs of patients and their loved ones.
