TDS IRC Scholar in Residence Program

Program Purpose

The Data Science Scholar in Residence Program at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center invites leading scholars in data science to share knowledge, foster collaborations, and enhance networking within our scientific community. Scholars integrate with the Fred Hutch Data Science community through seminars, collaborative research, and workshops, enriching both their research and ours.

Program Overview

This program provides a platform for renowned data science scholars to collaborate closely with Fred Hutch researchers, advancing cutting-edge research. During a 1–3 month residency, scholars have the opportunity to work on joint research projects, present seminars, and participate in academic exchanges, benefiting from Fred Hutch's collaborative environment.

Residency terms are flexible, ranging from 1 to 3 months, based on mutual agreement between the scholar and the program administrators.

  • Scholars receive a monthly stipend of $5,000 to cover housing and living expenses in Seattle.
  • Scholars are expected to maintain salary and benefits from their home institutions; however, alternative financial arrangements may be discussed if necessary.

Candidates are selected based on their potential to contribute to Fred Hutch’s research goals. (Priority is given to faculty members):

  • Faculty Members (full-time, tenure-track, or equivalent)
  • Postdoctoral Fellows

Scholars must be nominated by a Fred Hutch faculty sponsor with whom they have an existing collaboration. The nomination should include:

  • A 2-page proposal outlining the scholar’s research, planned activities, and potential for collaboration with Fred Hutch.
  • A CV for the Scholar, detailing relevant experience and achievements.

Applications are reviewed based on:

  • Research relevance and collaboration potential with Fred Hutch’s initiatives
  • Proposed academic contributions, such as seminars or workshops
  • The Scholar’s achievements and field impact

The TDS IRC administrative team provides comprehensive support, including HR, payment processing, and other logistics during the residency. The team will work closely with the scholar's host program to coordinate the residency experience.

Scholars agree to follow Fred Hutch’s policies, including confidentiality, research integrity, and intellectual property standards, ensuring a respectful and productive environment.
