The Hutch Award was created in 1965 to honor Fred Hutchinson, the inspiration for Fred Hutch Cancer Center.
The Hutch Award historically was awarded to an active Major League Baseball player who best represented the honor, courage and dedication exemplified by Hutchinson. The inaugural winner was Hall of Fame player Mickey Mantle. Past honorees include 13 other MLB Hall of Fame players and a total of 56 Hutch awards have been given.
Two honorary awards also went to former President Jimmy Carter in 2016, in recognition of a lifetime of service, and to Dr. Anthony Fauci in 2022, for his lifelong dedication to public health and scientific discovery.
